Whenever I see Barack Obama oratory from the podium of the White House surrounded by his Cabinet and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton bores him back a cold glance, I could not help thinking how lucky the President that the head of its Foreign Ministry does not have the gift of the Medusa-Gorgon and Basilisk – not that he would not say hi.
The final stage of the struggle for the nomination of the Democratic Party, which all outsiders are laid down their arms and in the arena there were only two favorite, was marked by particularly severe battles. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton fought a life and death, not disdaining any means. Too high were the stakes to tie their hands politeness rules.
By nomination to the Congress when the winner is already determined, the mutual bitterness reached its height. Especially the part of the former first lady, who from the very beginning the campaign believed himself the only real candidate and look at their rivals as props, which at the appropriate time will be removed from the scene, not to confuse her feet. She was very upset by his defeat, not without reason, believing that fell victim to foul play.
Political scientists wondered what plans builds Hillary Clinton. Will she sit back and wait for the inexperienced, neobstrelyanny Obama stumble, to fully enjoy his humiliation? Or is it going to cause trouble at the Congress and thwart him in the hope of fatally undermine Obama’s chances in the general election? In this case, it can be said of his party, “I warned you that he has no chance,” to tie Democrats to her guilt and to remain the only undisputed contender in the next presidential cycle.
Many were expecting the congress civil war, rebellion strong detachment of feminists who will avenge the winner of the humiliating defeat of its first-ever woman, who had a real chance to become U.S. president. But the expected fireworks did not happen, usually rabid feminists have behaved like a good girl, Hillary did not muddy the waters, though it was obvious that she was painfully experiencing the triumph of a rival, and sometimes it is difficult to restrain.
From this observers have concluded that on the eve of the congress implacable enemies shook hands – former first lady would behave with decorum at the congress, a noble and it will be rewarded with some high post in the Obama administration (perhaps the appointment to the Supreme Court, which soon will be at least one vacancy), or Obama bought off a rival, promising to help in paying its huge debts (she lent her campaign headquarters of 13 million dollars out of pocket).
But no one expected that Clinton would require a new president will agree to give her the polish position – Secretary of State. Secretary of State is fourth in a series of presidential throne, which in itself testifies to its political weight. But the State Department is also an excellent springboard for further career, as his head is the most noticeable and in fact the second highest post in the administration.
(Vice-Presidents, as a rule, do not count, their primary duty – to be ready in case the president something will happen, but still represent him at the funeral of foreign public officials. No wonder John Nance Garner, served as vice president in the first two administrations of Franklin Roosevelt, contemptuously spoke of his position that it was “not worth a bucket of warm saliva” (in fact, Garner was even more gusto, but shy journalists have resorted to euphemism). The powerful vice president like Dick Cheney – a rare exception rules.)
The foreign minister is constantly in view of the world, the influential secretary of state plays a crucial role in the administration and sometimes compete in popularity with the President himself (think Henry Kissinger). How could Barack Obama made a blunder to appoint his main rival at such a significant position where it can really compete with him in the next presidential election? What was he thinking?
